about

When the three of us initially gathered together one cold wintry night, our very rough plan was to perform traditional songs as well as contemporary songs, that we’d always loved, written in the folk vein by people like Dougie McLean. We all shared similar tastes in music and had very similar musical influences – here at last was the vehicle to indulge ourselves. When the time came to choose our name, ‘The Poachers’ seemed a perfect title given our predilection for ‘poaching’ other people’s material. As Dick Gaughan says – If everyone sang their own songs, all songs would die with the writer. Occasionally we will do a straight traditional version of a song, although more often than not, we end up with our own quite eclectic arrangements and fusion of styles. Whilst there are so many great songs out there begging to be sung, we have recently started writing our own songs, combining the melodic and narrative strengths of English and Celtic traditional music with our own contemporary Australian experiences. We see no divisions in music and attempt to cut across the cultural barriers between folk, world and popular music. Contemporary living seems to dilute and diminish our sense of identity. We use our music to try to understand who we are, what our roots are and how they are connected. Two of our own compositions are featured here on this album 'Silvery Moon' and 'Walk Away'. We hope you enjoy the album as much as we have enjoyed the process of getting our ideas onto disc.
